Jeff Bezos, the executive chairman of Amazon, has invested in an innovative artificial intelligence startup, Physical Intelligence. This company is developing advanced digital brains for robots, enabling them to perform a wide range of tasks, from folding laundry to bussing tables and assembling boxes.

In its latest funding round, Physical Intelligence raised $400 million. The round was led by Bezos, along with venture capital firms Lux Capital and Thrive Capital. According to The New York Times, this funding round has valued the startup at $2 billion pre-money.

While many startups focus on robots designed for single tasks, Physical Intelligence aims to create versatile robots capable of performing multiple jobs. Karol Hausman, the CEO and cofounder of Physical Intelligence, who previously worked as a robotics scientist at Google, describes their vision as creating "a true generalist."

The cornerstone of their innovation is the pi-zero, a general-purpose robot foundation model built from data collected across eight different robots. Each robot completed different tasks to contribute to this foundational model. Additionally, Physical Intelligence utilized open-source data to refine their software.

"Our goal is not to solve any single application but to provide our model with a general understanding of physical interactions," the company explained in a post from October. This approach aims to develop robots that can seamlessly switch between various tasks.

Demonstration videos from Physical Intelligence showcase robots performing complex actions. For example, one robot retrieves laundry from a dryer and folds it, while another clears a table by sorting trash from dishes and stacking multiple items efficiently.

In one detailed example, the robot learned smaller actions required to clear a table. It could shake off trash from plates before placing them into a bin or stack multiple dishes together. The versatility extends to other tasks, such as folding cardboard boxes and placing eggs into cartons, as shown on the company's website.

Despite these advancements, Physical Intelligence acknowledges that their technology is still developing. Videos also show robots failing to complete some tasks, highlighting the ongoing challenges in creating generalist robot policies. However, their experiments have demonstrated capabilities beyond any prior robot learning systems.

Physical Intelligence, Bezos, and the venture capital firms involved in the funding did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This investment comes at a time when major tech companies are heavily investing in robotics. Elon Musk's Tesla is developing humanoid robots for factory and home use, Meta is researching touch perception in robotic hands, and OpenAI and Microsoft are backing humanoid robot startup Figure AI. Additionally, Amazon has partnered with Agility Robotics for warehouse robots, including the bipedal robot Digit.
